Christie's England
"The Loveliest Place in the World"
Greenway House, Agatha Christie’s Summer home, opened to the public for the first time in February 2009. Christie fans are now able to visit the house she described as “the loveliest place in the world”.
Greenway is found on the bank of the River Dart in Devon and the grounds are beautiful. Christie herself spent many summers there with her family and it is the inspiration behind Dead Man’s Folly. There is even a boat house such as the one the body of Marlene Tucker was found in!
The house has an amazing history and it is the individual touches that make it so special. Visitors can view the many personal collections and the careful restoration work means that guests find a house portraying the spirit of the author’s holiday home.
Greenway was donated by Christie’s family to the National Trust in 2000 and Mathew Prichard, Agatha Christie’s grandson, has said, “What I wish most for Greenway is that the people who visit it feel some of the magic and sense of place that I felt when my family and I spent so much time there in the 1950s and 1960s.”
It truly is a wonderful place and the National Trust have done a wonderful job of transforming the house to its former glory.
Visitors are able to reach the property via “green ways” and can enjoy a cruise down the River Dart from Dartmouth. For details of opening times and transport please visit the National Trust's Website.
