Before Jane Marple has a chance to answer, Major Palgrave vanishes, only to be found dead the next day. But what happened to the photo? Why is the hotelier prone to nightmares? Why doesn't the most talked-about guest, a reclusive millionaire, ever leave his room? And why is Jane Marple fearful for her life?

This novel introduced Jason Rafiel, who would strike up an unusual friendship with Miss Marple. The two couldn't be more different but have tremendous respect for each other. Rafiel would later impact on Miss Marple's life in Nemesis. In 1989 Joan Hickson appeared as Miss Marple in the BBC TV production.
