Philomel Cottage

Alix King and Dick Windyford have been engaged for years but he is postponing marriage until he can offer to support her. When Alix unexpectedly inherits a fortune, Dick is too proud to accept sharing it.  Giving up on him Alix marries another man but soon after strange things begin to occur!

This story of suspense has a dėnouement open to more than one interpretation.  It was adapted, and expanded, in 1935 by actor and playwright Frank Vosper and named Love from a Stranger.  It was first filmed in 1937 with Basil Rathbone and Ann Harding, and again in 1947 with John Hodiak and Sylvia Sidney.  It has appeared twice on UK television, in 1938 and 1947 – both were live performances.  Published in The Listerdale Mystery. It also appeared in The Witness For The Prosecution and Other Stories in the US.
