More about this story

An attractive young wife boards the Orient Express where she chances upon Parker Pyne. She admits she is unhappy and that her husband has left a cryptic message which involves her in some way.

Parker Pyne again follows in the footsteps of Hercule Poirot. Both men travelled down the Nile and encountered murder and both men travel on the Orient Express, meeting people in crisis, both this story and Murder on the Orient Express being published in the same year. They also shared a working friendship with Ariadne Oliver, the crime novelist through which Agatha Christie voiced many of her views, and Poirot's secretary Miss Lemon originally worked for Parker Pyne.

This story first appeared in the US in Cosmopolitan magazine, and later in the collection of short stories, Parker Pyne Investigates.

It has never been adapted.
