Miss Carnaby, who appeared in The Nemean Lion makes another appearance in this story with a mystical twist. A group of women have joined a cult known as "The Flock of the Shepherd", led by the handsome and charismatic, Dr Anderson. Concerned, Miss Carnaby goes to Poirot for help; all these women are making new wills in which Dr Anderson becomes sole beneficiary.

Published in 1940 in This Week in the USA under the title Weird Monster and later that year in the Strand Magazine in the UK. It was included in the collection The Labours of Hercules in 1947, which was adapted for TV in 2013, as part of the final series of Agatha Christie's Poirot.
