The final novel in Agatha Christie’s Mary Westmacott series, it allowed her to explore the same themes evident through the six novels; love, obsession, family and identity. Christie's used the pseudonym to expand from the detective genre and into drama and tragedy.
The title is taken from the Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 11, Verse 30: “For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” The full line is quoted as the epigraph to the novel.
It has never been adapted.
